Hi all,

I dare say many of you have had the same headache... and apologies if this is covered in another thread, but is there anywhere on earth that has spacesaver spare wheels and/or tyres available to fit the X300?? (apart from the obvious of happening on a second hand one of course. Rare as hens' chompers).

Or failing that, is there perhaps an adapter plate or something of that nature that can allow you to fit a wheel from a different car? I've learnt from "trying on" wheels from other makes that they're not all the same size and stud pattern etc.

Even google's no help! So if anyone has any ideas then that will serve to prove to those robot scum that we humans are still on top!

Cheers!

I thought all X300 had full size spares.

Two of my cars came with space savers. Maybe the law is different in the USA. My suggestion would be to get a full size spare of any style and use that. An XJ40 steel wheel shoud fit but beware they may all be metric!

In europe spare wheels were standard - the fully wheel was optional.

My dad's car's an Australian-market XJR. From memory a full-sized spare wouldn't even fit in the wheel well, though that might have something to do with the piece of foam that holds the tool kit, and also the XJR wheels are a little wider.

The lid can be fixed in two position: a lower if the spare wheel and a higher for the fully wheel.

A full size XJR spare does indeed fit.
I've never seen a space saver spare in an X300 here in the USA, but I have seen them for sale on eBay overseas.

Most of the Jaguar space savers I've seen on eBay are a multi-spoke design, painted a sort of "safety" red color, but I'm not certain that fits the X300. I found one listing on the eBay UK site that says the photo below is the space saver for the Xj40, X300 and X308.

I've only seen full sized spares in USA spec cars, including my 1997 XJR which has the full size XJR rim fitted with the 255 width Pirelli. The black styrofoam tool kit fits under the XJR full sized rim & tire with no problem.

My 1995 XJR/USA market had the full sized spare as well

My understanding, FWIW, is that the full size spare was an option, technically speaking, but all USA market X300 cars were so equipped.

The XJR, or any other with the limited slip diff, would certainly *require* it, as you wouldn't want to run two different diameter tires on the rear

I think they give the US-Models the fully spare because the save spare is only for short distances in emergency.

I seem to recall reading "Maximum of 30 mph and 30 miles" on one some time ago. And yet, within the last two weeks, cruising along IH20 in East Texas at 80 mph, I was casually overtaken by a Honda (or was it a new Jag? I can't tell the difference these days) sporting one! (And I could swear there wasn't so much as an outhouse within 30 miles!)

Part of the charm of Grace, Space, and Pace..... not only is it full size, but a proper alloy wheel matching all the others! You can have a flat, but arrive at your intended destination unruffled with your car looking properly great, onlookers none the wiser because the shredded tire has stowed out of sight in its designated space.

A friend at work bought a new Mustang - he got a can of Fix-A-Flat in lieu of either style spare. He found it as useful as lips on a chicken when he cut a sidewall on some Godforsaken stretch of tarmac in Nebraska (or Kansas? See previous remark about Hondas and new jags)

It's typically more along the lines of 55 mph and 100 miles or some such. Still, they're intended for 'limp home' use only.

Maybe, but I don't think so. Space saver tires became the norm in most US cars in the 80s, and full size an option if available at all. I think the US X300s just came with the full size because that's how the dealers ordered them or Jaguar North America specified them to simplify ordering, maximize profit and capitalize on what US buyers typically wanted.

A lot of the USA spec X300s seem to be "fully loaded" from the factory, especially the top models like XJR and VDP. It doesn't seem like many US buyers bothered to spec their own options like you see in other markets.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I've only ever had one flat tyre in my whole life - which was caused by a mechanic leaving my spare key on the tyre and not telling me about it, so when I drove away...

As a result I've got in the habit of not carrying a spare at all in the city (in an Alfa the spare represents more that 1% of the car's weight*-).

However I'm thinking in this case I might have a look and see whether I can fit a full-sized spare in the wheel well. The XJR "sport" wheels are quite handsome after all (and remind me a little of the XJ220 wheels which I'm pretty sure they must be inspired by!

Full size fits.

Did it to mine. AN XJ6 Poverty Pack, with Steel wheels, and space saver.

Found another steel wheel, and s/hand tyre, dropped straight in.

All you lose is the stepped boot floor due to wheel height.

All the other Jags have always had full size matching wheels.
