X300 VS XJR which is which?
I posted this in the 'newby' section and it was suggested that it would be better placed in the X300 section, so here is my question:
"Wow - this forum is incredible!
Browsed the X300 FAQ thread - what a treasure trove!! Thanks to all the members who believe in paying it forward...
A simple question remains: my Jaguar is an "XJR" according to the label on the car. Is it also an XJ6 and an X300? If so, how can it be 3 different models at once? Confusing to say the least...thanks in advance for any enlightenment directed towards my confusion! "

XJ, gives the series.
XJ6 was the Generic name 'ordinary' people use for any Jag of this particular shape.
X300 is the Jaguar denomination for your series of XJ6.
XJR is the denomination for your particular member of the X300 series.
So in a sense, all are correct, but only one is accurate.
However if you are only going to use the XJR name then you will always need to give the year because XJR also carried over to the V8 cars.
Hence, why we ask for details in your signature.
HTH, a little.

Jaguar used the following badges on what the publicity material called the "New Series XJ" but what Jaguar internally called the X300.
The 'Classic' brochure listed:
The 'Sport' brochure had:
If you go through all the docs, Jaguar internally referred to the long wheelbase models as "X330 Majestic", the V12s as "X305" and the XJR as "X306" - when you're busy engineering something, you have to give it a name long before the marketing get their hands on it!
The 'Classic' brochure listed:
- XJ6 - Base model straight-six
- Sovereign - An XJ6 with various luxury options as standard
- XJ12 - A Sovereign but with the V12 engine and sports suspension/wheels as standard
- Daimler Six - The top spec luxury straight-six
- Daimler Double-Six - The top spec V12 (but with the touring suspension/wheel setup)
The 'Sport' brochure had:
- XJ Sport - An XJ6 with various sporty options as standard, including sports suspension and wider alloys
- XJR - Top spec sports straight six (with supercharger). Also known as the XJR6 a) to differentiate it from the supercharged XJ8 and b) because that's what's stamped on the manifold.
- Executive - An XJ6 with a couple of options (but not as many as a Sovereign) to help them sell before the V8s came along.

Internally at Jaguar X300 was further subdivided into:-
X304 - naturally aspirated 6 cylinder cars
X305 - V12 cars
X306 - supercharged 6 cylinder cars
Some people may refer to these designations, but they are not widely used.
Quoting the model year (not calendar year the car was first registered) should distiguish a 6 cylinder XJR from and 8 cylinder XJR, but I just find it easier to refer to XJR6 and XJRV8, unless you are referring to something that is model year specific. Both XJR6 and XJRV8 cars were built in 1997, the former being a 1997MY XJR and the later being a 1998MY XJR.
