Smile X300 water pump pulley

I am getting ready to have my leaking water pump replaced. I bought a new one from Rock Auto some time back. My tech and I were looking at it today and we have a question. We can't figure how the existing pulley is attached to the pump flange. There are no bolts. With the new one there is no pulley just the flange. There was included four studs for threading into the flange. We don't know how to attach a flange with no bolt holes to a flange with bolts.

Can someone help us. I don't want to tear into this job and find out I need another part.

Thanks guys.

Hmm... Are you sure you have the right part? I've never seen a pump listed for sale for the X300 without the pulley. There is no flange as such on the pump that anything could be bolted to.

The pulley can obviously be removed as it was available as a separate part but I suspect it is some kind of press fit that perhaps requires some special tooling?

It will be interesting to see if other have done this.

Hi, when I replaced my water pump (it was leaking) I dismantled the old one to see if it was possible to rebuild it using over the counter bearings and seals, I decided it wasn't. Both the pulley and impeller were a very tight press fit and from what I rember I had to use some heat too, you have to be mindful of the fact that the impeller is cast alloy and the pulley was also a casting of some sort and easily damaged, whilst they came off using a puller, I never refitted them, but it should be straightforward to do this with the use of a workshop press.

pully and flange are press in and out via hydraulic press machine. it has to be tight as there are no bolts to hold on them

You obviously have the wrong pump.
The same engine coolant pump is used on the XJ40 and X300 but with several different pulleys pressed on. Some have 'V' belts and others use 4 groove or 5 groove poly-groove belts.

I stand corrected guys. There is a pulley on the pump. But outside of the pulley the shaft extends out and there is a flange on the shaft with four bolt holes in the flange for mounting another pulley I suppose. I'll try to send a picture late.

Sorry for the confusion.

The flange is likely for a FAN and viscous clutch like that used on the 1988 to 1992 XJ40.
The 3.6 engine was also used for the XJ-S that had the GETRAG 5 speed manual gearbox. I believe they used an engine driven fan.
