XJ6 1997 Starting problems
Have been browsing through but not found a solution. I parked up and car won’t start. I am not getting any rpm reading on the cluster when cranking. After reading threads here I changed the crankshaft position sensor but I still don’t have any rpm reading on the cluster. Am getting 11volts on battery during crank but it just won’t start. I have also checked the inertia switch.
Fuel pump seems fine.
Im not very electrical or mechanically advanced so apologies in advance.
I truly believed changing the sensor would have solved the problem. It appears not as it’s still not reading any rpm while cranking.
could I have been sold a faulty sensor or should I be looking at something else?
thanks

Inline 6 correct ?
The CKPS codes do not always show and parts of the single signal used in different ways like the 2nd portion of the starting sequence fuel pump relay enable
In the starting sequence the fuel pump will come on for 3 seconds then off , fuel pressure should be trapped and bled of by injector pulses until the CKPS seeing engine rotation will enable the fuel pump to come back on again and stay on for the duration of your drive
Suggest rotating the key to just before the start position to charge the fuel lines then key off and crack the fuel line fitting just fwd of the fuel pressure regulator after 1 hour
You should still have full fuel pressure at 1 hour , 43 psi , fuel pressure is hard to plumb into a gauge so......................
use 2 wrenches to not twist fuel lines
The instrument cluster fuses ( 2 or 3 ) are in the left heelboard fuse box
With the key in the run position with the engine not running remove the relay in the corner of that fuse box and it should click in your finger tips back to the open position
See page 22

You should be using the camshaft position sensor as the hockey puck on the fwd right side for initial timing in the very beginning of the start sequence
The engine should start with the CMPS sensor connector off , just takes more engine revolutions , but this can work against you if too low fuel pressure or trapped pressure bleed off
The power that is " sitting " on your fuel injectors comes from the large ECU Control relay part # 7606 back on page 17 and can be swapped with a headlight , fog , or A /C clutch of the same part #
