Cranking but no start - RESOLVED
Hi all
I’ve just changed the timing chain on my 2.2 diesel X Type. All seemed to go well, the valve timing is set precisely, and all is back together.
Now, however, it won’t start. It turns over fine, there is pressure at the fuel rail, and RPM is indicating on the OBD scanner, so the crankshaft sensor is working.
There is no hint of start, just cold cranking. Any ideas?

aidsmith, when attempting to crank the engine, look down at the center console. Is there a bright red light on next to the gear shift. If so, the car is not recognizing the key and is therefore blocking the fuel injectors from firing, immobilizing the car. I would think that if you are cranking the car, you should get a bit of a fuel smell coming out of the exhaust if all was working correctly. If you are getting no fuel smell, then this would point you back to the fuel injectors as being the stoppage of the fuel (not necessarily the problem). The trick will be that if you are getting no fuel smell, you need to determine why the fuel injectors are not emitting fuel. This could be attributed to either a bad computer, significant air in the fuel system, or blockage of the fuel rail. I haven't messed with the diesel engine in the X-TYpe, just trying to give some pointers based on what I know about diesel engines.
I got it sorted. My son towed me round the block, which exposed a leaking HP fuel line, so I tightened it and bled the others. After that it sounded like it would start, so I persuaded it with a squirt of brake cleaner down the intake. Happy days, thanks for the reply.
