Default xj6 grinding noise

when if first bought my 96 xj6 it made a little bit of a grinding noise on startup but only sometimes. i've owned it for about four months and it now happens every time i start it and even when im driving. its not very loud you have to listen to it but its definetly there. what would it be?

My guess would be upper timing chain tensioner.

agreed. sounds like upper chain tensioner. the tensioner is hydraulic valve operated and they do tend to age a little less than gracefully and cause a slight slapping effect of the chain on the dampers. an easy replacement to your benefit though.

Hi,

I have a pretty good oil leak from my 1994 XJ6 XJ40 upper tensioner. I can se that there is a gasket/O-ring kit. How do I pull the tensioner, please? I removed the two bolts and the tensioner is not moving an inch. More force or does the cover need to come off? What is the the re-tensioning procedure? Best regards, Bo Andersen
