Hi,
just bought this beatiful '02 XJ Sport and a problem already..ughh..
When it's cold out there is squeels when you start it..It does it till you start driving and bit longer sometimes now..It can be really loud too..I've also had a once a a very short rattle,but for a second or two only...What is it? I've read the forum and found similar problems, but still no answer yet..Tensioners (hope not), no warranty, or something else, does anyone know? it's kind of scarry reading what has happened to people, and how much it costs..!

Sorry, but noises are hard to Diag without being there. Sounds though that belt and tensioner need replaced.
as for the rattle, could be tensioners, but you will know once they really go bad.
just get rid of the squeel first. Then see what you hear.

 

How about worn out slipping belts? They probably squeel until they heat up and start to grab fully.

I just hoped someone's going to have a definite answer, thought it might be a common problem on XJ8's..No Jaguar techs around here (Lincoln,NE), not many want to even take a look at it..! Does the Jaguar factory recommend at what mileage the tensioners need to be replaced? Are they expensive to replace before they go really bad?

drive belt and belt tensioner is cheap. Timing chains and tensionsrs get pricey. 2500+

 

one more question, sorry...how possible is it for a timing chain to brake on this car with this mileage?..

 

Very. It all depends how it was maintained. You will get some indicators of things going south first. Rattling constant. Rough running etc. Anything unusual get it looked at.

 

a start up squeek can be expensive.. but rare.. some cars need alternator brackets replaced... and some may need compressors..as per arebulletins indicate..

is this squeal a screeching sound or a howling sound. If is sounds like a Howell it is probably the bearing on the as compressor clutch. They will do that in very cold weather and will continue to Howell until the bearing warms up and the grease softens. You could try some belt dressing spray on the belt. If the nose stops than you will know that its the belt and you need to replace it. As fare as the rattle, thatmost likely is from the timing chain and is common when first starting up. I would recommend using a full synthetic lubricate like mobile-1 in stead of motor oil. It is a much better lubricate will give you max chain and engine life. I use it in my 98 xj and have over 110,000 mile with no engine problems. I have used it for year in many cars and have gone 300,000 miles with out chain or engine overhauls.

thank you all for responding..I did take the Jag to Auto Performance, they couldn't figure out where the squeel comes from..Well, I'll just try to ignore it, and hope the spring will get here earler then usuall..!
