Is energy conserving oil good to use since it supposedly increases mpg?

Spot on, and with very few exceptions almost no engine is picky about oil. Use the oil recommended by the OEM, end of story.

For reasons unclear to me some owners want to turn the subject into rocket surgery.

Cool Oil? We don't need no blinking oil!

I love it! This topic is ALWAYS interesting on every car forum I have ever been a part of. The Madison Avenue "Madmen" would have us believe that this is a matter of grave and highly technical concern. To resurrect a time-worn retort:
"NOT!"

Read (and follow!) the manual.
Use synthetic if you can afford it (and when "on sale" it is not much more than dinosaur debris).
Change it at least as often as the manual instructs, more often if it makes you feel better!
Ta Da! That's all folks!

Sounds like you've been drinking the Madison Avenue Koolaid yourself.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
