Default 1998 XJR

The seller says the car is in limp mode. He also claims it is a wiring fault between the transmission and computer module. And, he added it is a common problem. I have a friend with an S-Type R that screams and with 177k has had no problems. Which car is more exemplary of the current brand? They are beautiful rolling art in my opinion. Thanks in advance, DaveP

It could be something relatively cheap like throttle cable alignment, or more serious like computer problems. Does the seller list the OBD codes? Are there other problems with the car? Without knowing both of those, I wouldn't pay much more than scrap value for the car, since a CAN communication failure could be a huge can of worms.

As for STR vs x308 XJR, it's hard to say. There's many threads on s-type vs xjr. The STR is more "modern" jag parts, so you could get things like the touchscreen nav, and so on. I've always thought it made more sense to compare the STR to the x350, since they share a lot of parts. But since this is the x308 forums, obviously the x308 is the better choice the STR is nice, but either XJ just looks so much better imo. And I can never get over the grill shape on the S-Type.
