Default 1998 XJr back on the road after 10 years

1998 XJ are back on the road after 10 years I bought this car earlier this summer missing a radiator the guy said he had gotten sick before he got time to fix it he didn’t remember what was wrong with it anyway I did a diagnosis found out the motor was frozen decided to swap it was a different motor when I changed it dumped the motor oil it was half water then the motor would rotate I did a compression test and some of the cylinders were dead with a camera I could see in the spark plug hole some of the valve seats so the motor was wasted I swapped it with another engine out of a car that had water damage from a bad sunroof and had other problems. I got it back in this new car today use the old radiator and I had to swap out the fuel tank as the first one was rusted the car started today ran Long enough to dump 5 quarts of oil out the oil cooler in the front it had a hose in a hole in it. I took the oil cooler off the other motor and just put it in I don’t have the right orange so I might get another leak but it is running there are many other problems with his car but this was the biggest wanted to get over ‘

Hunter green must’ve been one of the most popular colors as there are four of them here two xjr and 2 xj8 next I would say is the silver??? It did clean up pretty good was just a pressure washer and I might trade some rubbing compound on a buffing wheel. I think I have an ex JR that has a good inside door panel for the drivers door as this one’s got a little bit moldy. And there’s all kinds of things that need to be worked out but the good thing is it’s back together I got the bonnet put on it this afternoon this evening and it’s throwing me a few codes but most concerning is the chirping noise that I think is coming from the supercharger I would suspect it’s out of oil ?

what miles on the donor engine? Does the chirp appear coming off revs?

post your codes and we can assist.

Great to see another ‘Survivor’ 😉

It takes a bit of "Moxie" to take on a project with that degree of damage and make-shift repairs.
My hat is off to you sir.

It should be about 130,000 mile donor engine but it’s been 20 years easy just go to bed at two and three other cars you never know. I was surprised to have that chirping noise as it didn’t make it or I didn’t hear it when it was in the other car. You had a car had such a terrible exhaust leak the catalytic converter’s are actually burned out so very noisy . And you could not hear that chirping noise it could be just low on supercharger oil? No real Definite codes yet is all this is going to get in still hooked up yeah to get to this point I had to pull two motors and install one and I have left over with a parts vehicle

Correction are you spell decision. It’s been 20 years and the Engine could have been in two or three different cars you never know

chirp could just be an old, damaged, or otherwise slipping belt. Could also be a damaged coupler in the supercharger, but those generally "knock". Low oil in the blower wouldn't chirp I don't think.

Sure its not the belt tensioner? Those will chirp when going back or with a loose belt. Not sure what would cause the blower to chirp. Possibly bad bearings I guess. Remove the SC belt and see if the chirp goes away. Get a stethoscope or long screwdriver/prybar and try to isolate the noise.

So with a stethoscope the noise on the supercharger is at the top on the driver side and it is definitely coming out of the supercharger it seems to quit when a little bit of fuel is put to it? The only code that I’m getting off this car now is P1112 which brings me back to the catalytic converter I will double check that they’re all hooked up but my first thoughts are this car has been sitting for 10 years and they need to get very Hot . I’m going to dump some extra gasoline in it to make sure that it’s good enough or a better mixture I put some gas additive injector cleaner in the first batch we’ll see. The rumor is that the earlier superchargers made a little bit of noise? Car drives nice but it doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of power? My earlier codes were because I put the wrong MAS valve on the car The other was for a non-supercharged car

If you ever get sporty and decide you want to put a replacement coupler inside the charger, get the OEM Eaton spring loaded coupler for it. All the other solid ones you’d normally get in a rebuild kit only add noise unless you enjoy a “marbles rattling around” type of noise at idle. I put one of those solid green couplers inside of mine after I rebuilt it and I cannot tell you how irritating it was to do all that work only to hear it sound like $hit after first startup. Other members who inquired about rebuilding theirs, that’s the first thing I warned them about. Get only the oem spring loaded coupler on eBay.

Unless it had a solid coupler replacement the supercharger shouldbe virtually silent, even on the 'early' cars. Mine's a 98 and its quiet.

On the solid couplers - I've owned a lot of GMs with the Eaton M90 (I know the Jag uses an M112) and the M90s all use solid couplers stock. Definitely no noise from them unless something is wrong, I wonder why the M112 uses a spring-loaded coupler and makes noise with the solid? Actually, my 2003 Cobra had an M112 and I put a solid coupler in it with no noise, what's different about the Jag?

I honestly don’t know but, I know of 2 other guys locally and a handful of forum members who changed theirs to the solid and nobody had anything good to say about it because they thought they did something wrong but it just turned out it was the coupler making all that racket.

My iPad broke down on me and I couldn’t get on the form to ask the questions that I need to. Much is happened to his car and trying to run it back-and-forth about a couple miles on it helped it..Then the radiator that I installed was bad it was leaking and I just had to go back to the boneyard and get different radio room an xj8:: The supercharger has quieted down it’s got a little bit of Knox in it but not bad and I can certainly live with it it seems to be normal what everyone describes It stays in Restricted performance and it gives me a code of P1112 gives it twice I have double checked all the wires on the catalytic converter‘s and they are hooked up I have swapped out the Mas A couple times thinking that I had the incorrect one on there this card is a October 1997 and the motor is in October 1998 but I believe it is still considered an X308 it runs very good but it just won’t get out Restricted performance

Since you have an AJ26 engine management, what’s the part number on the replacement MAF sensor? You cannot put a non-supercharged MAF sensor on a supercharged car. When my 98’ XJR started throwing rich codes for both banks, I did install a complete AJ27 supercharged MAF sensor with housing along with needing to switch a couple of the pins around in the connector and it’s been working properly for thousands of miles now.

Also, are you sure it’s not a P1121 code vs a P1112 code??
