Welcome
I will try to help you out on certain questions as far as my knowledge goes lol
1- These two , throttle body and timing chains can be a real problem for any car not solely XJR . So, cleaning might work marvel to throttle body , timing chain should go very long time .I think your main concern should be compressor unit
2- I think what you saw should be the switch that activates kick down when you floor your car . It shfits down as much as two speed down during hard accleration thanks to this under pedal button
3- N/A
4- Arden
5- Tuning your PCM is possible considering XJ40 can also be tuned lol

Interior is just nice but I prefer X300s over X308s though

Congratulations on buying a fantastic car! I have owned my 1999 XJR since new - 115K miles - no problems of any significance, only routine maintenance expences, utterly reliable and still delights visually and sensually.

Various performance upgrades at http://www.eurotoysltd.com/

I would strongly advise against defeating the governor. Having spent many hours at triple digit speeds in the car, the front end gets very floaty at over 150mph - the aerodynamics just don't do well at heroic speeds. Perhaps a front airdam would help, but the nose is already low enough to incur damage from many concrete parking barriers....

If you dont have repair maintence records from the owner, find out what dealership took care of it and what was done. Theyll have the maintenance records on file. If unsure of tensioners, have one of the cam covers pulled and inspect, if plastic bodied upper tensioner, replaced both sides. If metal bodied and cam cover gaskets in good condion, not flattened out, bolt everything back up and you probobly wont need new gaskets. other than that, change the oil every 3k with conventional, 5k with synthetic, MAINTAIN fluid changes on everything to not have unreasonable maintenance issues....
