Default 2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas

hi, I have a 2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas. At times it has an issue with starting. What I would like to know is, Is there a part, component, etc. that will prevent the car from turning over when it is hot from driving and just sitting in the hot sun? I have has an issue when I drive my car, park it for a while it will not turning over or anything. But if I let it sit for a while and cool down it will start. This also occurs if I let it sit in the sun all day. I can jump the starter relay which turns it over but it will still not crank. Any suggests?

When you say "it will not start" does it crank and show signs of trying to start, (an occasional cylinder firing, but not a full running engine) or does it just crank with absolutely no sign of spark or fuel?

Also have you used an OBDII reader to check for any codes?

When I say "it will not start," I mean it does nothing except for warning lights on the console. The starter does not engage at all. The starter will engage if I jump it at the starter relay but it will not crank.

You need to first sort out your descriptions of what is happening and what is not happening. In the first post, you said:

"I can jump the starter relay which turns it over but it will still not crank" and in the last post you said:

"The starter will engage if I jump it at the starter relay but it will not crank"

"starter will engage" - means the starter solenoid will pull the bendix gear in (but the starter motor will not run, according to your second post)

"engine crank" - means the starter motor is turning the engine

"engine start" - means the engine fires up and starts running

So, give us an accurate description of what is happening (or what is not happening).

Put your finger on the starter solinoid relay and feel for it to click

If no click try swapping with a relay of the same part number like maybe a air conditioning relay or headlight

I always start with the basics. Jag's need voltage. Two areas that will cause you problems when hot are the battery connections and the bulkhead connection. They will overheat due to resistance from dirty connections. Once they cool down the problem goes away. I would start with cleaning and tightening the connections and go from there.

+1

Check the HPPM (High Power Protection Module) in the luggage compartment:

A regular issue is the cables either loosening or the crimped terminals breaking up.

Okay, maybe i had the terms backward. When I said start, I meant that the starter will engages so that the engine cranks. but it will not start. i'll attach a video.

Video of it starting.

Changed crankshaft sensor and clockspring. Horn still doesn't work but car starts and cranks not issues.

Correction. That didn't fix the problem. I'm sure there is an electrical issue between the starter relay and computer.

I had a problem on my 98 xj8. Turned out to be the falsebulkhead. It is in the engine compartment mounted on the module box on right side. It's where the cable from the power module and starter meet. Check for corrosion or as with mine it melted the plastic from a bad connection.

The power stud on the false bulkhead is a common fault. I keep a new one in stock because they melt often enough to warrant it.
