Well, you titled an XJ, but you wrote XJS in the post, I think you meant XJ's, ..wouldn't be the first time something similar has happened. But I'll relent and apologize for the mix up.
On the XJ I don't know of any burping plugs on an XJ, ...on the XJR there is the plug on SC exhaust to cylinder plate. But I would be replacing the thermostat also and that would give you a fluid breather and then top off at the reservoir after a warm up start.
