Well, I've taken the plunge. Originally, looking for a low mile 95-97 XJ6 VDP, I came across a near mint 2001 Black-on-Black XJ8 short wheel base with 75,000 miles. Having never seen a black interior up close before (except in an XJR with very dark wood and sleek seats which looks too modern for my taste). I found the combination of the classic black XJ8 leather with light gray piping and warm wood irresistable. Had always been a fan of biscuit or coffee interiors - until I saw black. The seduction was complete. Instant sale!

On the downside, practically I understand that as a 2001, I have somewhat less than a 50% chance of having an engine with metal chain tensioners. It was a "transitional" year. But, wish me luck. Any input on this issue would be appreciated. Also, would like to hear from other Black-on-Black fans, if you're out there.

 

I think the changeover was in the high F3xxxx to low F4xxxx VIN range.

Not a huge black on black fan, but I LOOOOOOVE the black interior on these cars. I have it too, under Titanium paint.

 

The chain tensioner thing is always in the back of my mind with my 99 xjr, but I stopped thinking about changing them because I am a gambling man. While they do fail for some people, I think I heard or read that 80 percent never fail. I am a compulsive oil changer and have never heard a peep from them. If they fail, I will have a good parts car for my other xjr.
