Default 2001 XJ8 wont stay in drive

Hi guys today when I was getting ready to leave work for home my car was on the 5Fl parking level at work, got down to the 4FL then noticed what seemed as if transmission was put in neutral then drive then neutral then drive, no banging no noises.

About 5 minutes later I get the much dreaded "TRANSMISSION FAULT" message on the display and now it only stays in drive for about 10 seconds then goes into neutral engine revs but car does not move at all,you can go back to N then D again and same thing happens, only stays there for about 10 seconds. I got the car a month and a half ago and had been doing tensioner work, some suspension work etc so have not checked fluid, car has 156,000 miles and transmission was shifting extremely smooth and quiet until this afternoon, in the morning it was fine.

Got a ride home from a co-worker so tomorrow when I get back will check battery voltage etc. I did disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to no avail, like I said no banging or any noises or even limp home mode, the car wont move, any suggestions, thank you in advance,JJ

Does it drive normal if you put it in 2 or 3?

HMMM, I think I tried it and it didnt work either otherwise Im sure I would have driven it home instead of leaving it at work but will know for sure tomorrow morning. Another thing i remember is it happened right shortly after going down the first ramp to the next floor, maybe low fluid i hope, doesnt seem like A-drum as Ive read here that it makes some loud banging noises when that happens, will update tomorrow. Thank you.

OK, new updates, went back this morning, measured voltage is good, almost 14.2 volts at idle. Moved j-gate thru all postions with key on to clear microswitches, rotary switch etc, tried it in sport mode same results, tried in 2 and 3 same thing, reverse is OK, car goes into drive for about 5 seconds then you feel it almost disengage but RPM's dont go up.

Car creeps forward slowly at barely maybe 3 MPH, revving engine has no effect it just revs up freely with no increase in speed. Almost seems as if there is just not enough pressure to keep it in drive, although initially for the first 5 seconds it engages fully into drive as you feel the car go into gear. Could it be low fluid or a faulty 1 gear solenoid, thank for any suggestions,Jesus.

Well fluid level OK, disconnected battery for a while etc,all the same, looks like transmission is toast from one day to the other with no warning no abuse nothing, from shifting buttermilk smooth in the morning to gone in the afternoon, amazing, Jesus.

Yeah, that can happen. It's not always the A drum, sometimes it's the bearing/ o ring trouble I had. Once the o ring fails it doesn't want to do much, however with the drum and the oring failure modes, it usually bangs into 5th gear and drives that way.
Search 5HP24 (at least I think the 2001 still has that transmission).
