Confirmation that it can happen to the non-Nikasil 4.0; My wife's car died in the driveway. Crank but no start. Always the resourceful mechanic, I start here at the Jag Forum. First I rule out fuel delivery and move to spark. I come across a term that was new to me: cylinder wash. Hmmm, maybe I should search on that. The conditions and symptoms fit exactly; short move cold then no compression cranking but the posts all seem to pertain to the Nikasil engines. Well only one way to find out... it was indeed cylinder wash. Cranked WOT until I could hear the compression coming back. Feathered throttle until it fired back up. Thanks to all for the information here, not sure I could have ever figured that one out without it.

 

It sounds like you got lucky, some people have a much harder time recovering from bore wash.
