2002 XJ8 Antenna Replacement

I'm replacing a broken antenna. I've removed the broken mast but the tape which moves the antenna up and down is torn as well. Do I need to remove the old tape in order to install new mast. If so, how do I remove the old tape. I turned the radio on but the tape does not come out of the casing. Any ideas?

I just had to replace mine. the mast was intact, but the plastic geared strip was broken, so I had to pull the motor and disassemble to get the broken piece of the geared strip out.

For those who are interested I found the mast on Rock Auto for $9.23
