722.6/W5A580 fluid filter o-ring mia

JTIS talks about pulling down the filter "squarely" to ensure that the o-ring comes out with the filter.
Of course, I read this after buttoning the pan up without ever touching or seeing an o-ring anywhere.
So, does the o-ring often hang in the bore? Or has the design been changed? The filter did take a firm smack at the pipe end to seat the pipe if that is any indicator.
I would really like to avoid crawling underneath to r&r the pan again with no space to work in.
So ... who can speak from experience?
If anyone is curious, the ATF was brown, opaque, and slightly milky at 80k miles. This is in line with what was found in the diff and the supercharger. No gross shavings though. Just the usual fine gray "dust".

The votes were 4/4 in favour of the o-ring being already present on the filter spigot out of the box.
A public thanks to the friendly techs here and the parts guy at the dealership who opened another one to take a look.
