98 XJR CAN Failure-Codes P-1638 & P-1638
so I have the nifty tool, but not the $14,000 jag diag tool and neither the 1,000's of hours you guy's have in Jag experience. Need some help please.
I have p-1638 and P-1642 codes. I have cleaned every connection I could find. Replaced all the fuses just for because. took off the MAF and cleaned it. Even replaced the spark plugs{who knows why}.
restricted performance, all guages go dead, no power etc. I know this is a fly by wire car etc.
What do you guys think./ From my research so far on the net this is definity a suckky thing. Do you think it is the Instrument cluster>? I am fairly mechanical and can follow directions if you do not mind giving some?. Would very much appreciate the help, do not want to take it to the $124.00 an hr dealer yet and or ever if I do not have to. Any tips and or tricks and or by-pass'???
Thanks

thanks Ken. I am 2 deep to quite now. rebuilt trans in 11/08. rebuilt supercharger in july 08, new drive shaft. pulleys, slotted rotors all around. tires of course. motor blew rear main in 4/09, The problem was intermittent prior and is now just off the charts after R&R the Motor this summer, and is now just full time.
I have had 3 Jaguars prior with stupid problems, but NEVER like this. I put 158,000 miles on my 2003 S-type R with just service requirements and just 2 modules.
Rguess it was my turn to get absolutly smoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. if you hear anything I would appreciate your feedback, this really suckks after replacing everything. sure would ACTUALLY like to drive this car before spending anymore damn money. sorry for the vent. but wtf is the deal with this rat?lol. So much for a one owner Kansas Jag. Ratatooey.
thx

It is strange how these items are linked together. When I had my one "restricted" performance I believe it was caused by a loss of signal from the instrument cluster to the climate control.
I ran the self diagnostic on the climate control and it was showing a loss of signal - then all went back to normal. When I had a discussion regarding this with the guys at the Jaguar dealer they confirmed that it could be a sensor, the cluster or wiring. The dealers just replace all the parts so its difficult to understand what actually causes the fault. I figured that it was in the wires because my temperature gauge on the dash was working.
The fact that you loose all the gauges would point me in the direction of a ground problem at the cluster - Have you gone as far as pulling the cluster ? It is crazy that the car goes to "restricted performance" for this type of fault.
Good luck -- and keep us in the loop
JagScott - The "S" type was a new RWD platform and ended up being shared with the Lincoln LS. The "X" was based off of a european platform. They did not use the FWD Taurus/ Sable platform. Ford did share parts between them -- some rather visible like the sun visor and switches in the LS .....a mistake IMO.

if anyone is interested. I ended up getting all the gremlins out of this Jag. the car must have been struck by lightning. ECM turned out to be fine, the BodCon Module, ABS pump and control Mod were smoked. The Cat is sleeping in my New England garage now and is going to the autobody shop in April, I am putting a hood scoop all be it a small hood scoop. Gonna be really cool peeps. The car will get a fresh total respray of the metalic black, also new shocks all around. gonna be great.

No Matter. I fixed my XJR so as to have operate as designed. Jaguars are RAT'S and WE all know they are. They look great and run great. But they are RAT's, with electrical problems in Brand New One. I bought an 2003 Stype (R) off the lot, spent 25 thousand dollars on every service and maintained the car like it was brandnew. under warranty it had no less than 7 modules replaced etc. My wifes XK convertible started having a problem and said no way. I took out the Jag motor, Jag Trans/propshaft and rear end. Did some welds to take it all in, rewired it and Now it is a GM conversion and will literally last forever. I sold the XJR yesterday. I am NO longer an R lover, but an R-realist. Jaguars look awesome but they are ALL Rats. On the look out for an 88-95 Silver Spur and I will gut the Spur as I did with my wifes XK with a full GM conversion except I will also put a Vette suspension in the Spur. Will update in the next 24 months as this will be a one of the kind Spur.
