Hi - just bought a 98 XJR and thought I'd start out with a tip, as I have a funny feeling I'll be here asking questions and may as well try to build the karma points up first...

I have the rectangular key fob with the lock/unlock/lights/boot buttons. Lo and behold, lights and boot work fine, lock and unlock don't work at all.

So I pulled it apart and cleaned the gunk off the inside of the button and the contacts on the board. After that it worked perhaps 1 in 5 times and only if i really mashed the button.

Pulled it apart again and tested the back of the button for conductivity. No surprise, it barely registered on the multimeter. So I got a circuit writer pen, painted the back of the buttons, and it now works a treat. I can be across the road, touch the button and the car is locked/unlocked.

I borrowed the circuit writer pen from the phone repair workshop I run, but they should be available from electronics stores and either amazon or ebay. The stuff dries like paint, and although I wouldn't expect it to last forever, I think it is a winner.
