Welcome Thismethatyou, please introduce yourself in the New Members Forum in the General Jaguar Forum top left under Forums. You will see the rules and areas to post this properly so other members with the same vehicle can respond appropriately. I'll see if I can get a mod to move this to the X308 Forum.

Hi Thismethatyou,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums. It's great to have you with us.

I have moved your post from the General Tech area to the forum for the X308, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1999 XJR. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.

Please do visit the https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/ and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Regarding your starter problem, how was the original starter diagnosed as the problem? Have you checked the battery power and control voltage supplies to the starter? If the correct voltages are present at the starter, the newly rebuilt starter may not be operating correctly, or the engine/starter ground strap may not have been correctly reinstalled.

If the proper voltages are not present at the starter, you can work your way upstream testing all relays, fuses and other components in the starting circuit, including the ignition switch. All of these can be tested, and they are identified in the Electrical Guide, which you can download here:

Jaguar X308 Electrical Guide 1999

Cheers,

Don

Sounds like a bad ground, as Don pointed out. This assumes the rebuild was done correctly. Most rebuilders are quite good at it and test the unit before releasing it to the customer. So, sounds all the world like a bad install.
