Default Air Flow Meter Changes in this Model

Is anyone aware of changes in the Air Flow Meter of the AJ24????? I have a friend with a 2001 VDP. He is experiencing some loss of power and a strong smell of gas under the hood.

His live data is showing that his engine is pulling about 1.4lbs per minute of air. I know that on my AJ16 the live data shows that the air is pulling .06lbs of air per minute. Why would the AJ24 show so much more.

More to the point, I thought we would try and replace the AFM. The one we received was vastly different than the one in the car. The one in the car was a DENSO model, Jaguar part number but it was missing the "bullet cone" in the middle of the AFM.

Any ideas? I had thought that the AFM was mistakenly showing too much air and so the computer was compensating with more gas. But when we put the new AFM with the "bullet cone" in it into the car (which is the part the car calls for) the car would not even start.

Thanks for the help.

Peace!
Jack

Default AJ24 vs AJ27

JagGenius, I didn't realize the change in appellation. (I meant to say AJ26 to begin with anyways) Did it occur because of the chain tensioners or the nikasil cylinders? I am most familiar with the AJ16 because that's what I own and that's what I've spent the most time under.

My question still remains though. Should his 2001 XJ8 be reporting that it is pulling 1.4lbs per minute of air to my OBDII reader?

We bought a used one from Motorcars LTD, and I have NEVER had a problem with anything I have received from them. But when we installed it, the car would not even start. I had to reinstall the one I believe to be faulty in order for the car to start.

The two AFM are different. The one in the car has a removable sensor with a plastic face and says DENSO. It is missing the "bullet cone" air director. The one we received has a thin metal cover over the top of the sensor that also says DENSO, it fits the connector and into the intake line properly and it DOES have the "bullet cone". HOWEVER, when I plug the replacement one into the system, the car won't start.

Two questions I would like to get answered are:
1. Was there a change in design in AFM of this series of cars? (X308) I believe.
2. What is the proper reading range for lbs per minute of air at idle?

Thanks for the info so far.
Peace!
Jack

i remember reading 7 grams pers second.. at idle
and there are two disigns of MAF sensors.. aj26 has a squared type and they never go.. and the 27 has a removable sensor from housing two screws.. maf sensor failures usually have codes to go along with them p0171 p0174 fake lean running codes..

Default Air Flow Meter

Well, there are no DTC codes reported aside from the pass code. However. 1.4lbs per min is about twice as much as 7g per sec.

With no codes, the performance problems have been hard to track down. He will get in and it have no power, give it gas and it will die out. Going up a hill it will hardly pull. Stuff like that.

No codes, so what do we look for?

Thanks
Jack

Ive had that issue twice with no codes . It wud make it easy if you had full trim data.
Had one maf problem wud not rev and had no *****. And had the intake clogged with inner fender material clogging the intake tube before the filter

My OBDII reader will pull the live data. When Don gets home we will record the information and post it.

Thank you again, I really appreciate the help.
