Either the engine has overheated or the problem is those original type head gaskets which the specialist seems to despise. They will use later spec metal head gaskets so hopefully it'll be OK. Heads are on their way to machine shop.
Tensioners are of latest spec and the engine is a non-nikasil sleeved block - which is nice. No scoring or any problems with the lower part of the engine.
Sounds like a nice basic top end rebuild, that ought to feel good in the seat of the pants when you get her goin' again. Good to hear the bottom end is tight...
Nothing basic about a rebuild on a quad cam quad valve english V8 Hh! Shimming them is akin to groundhog day. The MLS gaskets from the later 4.2 are the ones to fit as mentioned and far cheaper head bolts can be found at the Land Rover dealer - just sayin'
Well, five weeks and four and a half grand later I got the car back today. There were all sorts of unfortunate delays but it is now complete and I drove some 250 kilometers home - did not break down. Well, at least not yet.
Tomorrow summer tyres on and on Monday four wheel alignment.
That's great Finn, but for 4 1/2 grand of work, it best not break down. Now its time to get those new tires on and a nice long country road to enjoy her for the afternoon.
When I first bought my XJR it was constant coolant leaks. Ended up having to have my head gaskets done as well due to the overheating. I had Jaguar of Tulsa Replace ALL of my coolant hoses with the Head Gaskets. Haven't had a problem with it sense. I totally feel your pain though. It wasn't cheap.
It sounds like you got a proper job done on the engine, it's piece of mind you've paid for
It should be superb - an alignment on these cars, particularly after new bushes is akin to reset to the day it left the factory - smooth as silk. Enjoy it!
