Default any possible help would be apprecated

I have a chance at a 1999 xj6 70k miles, the problem with the car according to the present owner is it eats coils every couple of year. The car does not run know he said something about a blown fuse. The me is the original owner and said he had always had this problem, the fuse blows and there is a bad coils.

Can anyone help out a fellow British enthusiast, I loaded the LR but don't want to jump on the jag if there is not an answer to the problem.

I appreciate any and all help

I'd avoid it. Look for a solid 02-03 XJR. You'll be much happier.

If you are looking at a '99, that is the XJ8 and they do not suffer coil problems, so walking away would be a good idea. Whatever Jag you buy, if you are able to do your own maintenance and repairs, you will save a lot of money and probably have a better car. There is plenty of help available here.

All sound advices, no doubt.

However.

I don't know what is your skill level when it comes to DIY. I also don't know what is the intended use of the Jag (transportation, tinkering/restoring, etc.), so I will tell you what I would do.

I would be all over it IF the price is the one I could not refuse. There is NOTHING that I can not fix (with a generous help from the folks on this forum, and my trusty/cheap mechanic, when I don't feel like getting dirty). So I would buy it. It would not be the "must run car" (transportation), but a challenge/hobby kind a thing. And I would pay about a Grand for it. I'd play with it, and IF by some remote chance I can't fix it,....I would part it out.

Can't loose money on it. Again,....that's me, your situation might be different. If you are NOT DIY/Tinkerer/loves good chalenge kind of person, and if you have to pay retail for any diagnostics/work.....stay away!

Danelsand,
skill level is not an issue worked for Ford for 15-years and presently own 3 land Rover. Have worked on plenty of MG and Jag back when the had SU on them and not fuel injected. The Jag would be a spare car for the wife, we use on of the LR as a spare now.

I also own a disco along with a few jags and an MG- Danielsand is correct- if the price is right, go for it. Parted you are looking at north of 4K anyway so very little downside if you by between 1K-1500.

OK, then which car are you referring to? I am fairly certain there is not a MY 99 referred to as an XJ6. The MY 95 thru MY 97 XJ6 cars do loose aftermarket coils fairly often, but certainly not in epedemic proportions, especially for someone who can diagnose and repair them. If it is a MY 99, it is hard to imagine what might cause a "coil problem". I think your PO is full of something.

My car - 2001 XJ8 (VdP) still has the original coils (or at least for the last 5 years). That story sounds a little strange. Why would it eat coils ? Maybe oil leaking on them ? It's not running now because of a fuse? Sounds fishy.

Default xj8 coils

My 1999 XJ8 has eaten two coils since I bought it, ( 15 months). As it is 14 years old, I was not surprised at that. I will replace the rest of them soon, as a preventive measure. I would be more concerned that the car did not run at the moment. Get it running, check it out, negotiate a price.
