Default braking pump....does a replacment need programming??

hi you lot.........quick yeah or nahh from those in the know.

1998 XJR, ive changed the braking ABS unit in the front corner of the near side wing, the car is very poorly......see my other posts!.......i changed the unit as an indy that scanned the car said it was showing issues and that could be the reason for my buscam issues with the tranny......i got a correctly numbered replacment from a mate that i trust and he said its good, but ive been told by my indy that it MIGHT need programming..........well......either it should or it shouldnt????
can anyone throw some light on this before my wallet gets robbed again?!?!?!...........would it need programming to the car or not???

Mant thanks guys.

If the instrument pack displays "WRONG PART FITTED" then the ABS module needs to be configured to the vehicle OR the wrong part IS fitted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
