Camshaft Timing 98 XJR
Hi everyone!
I've just replaced head gaskets on my xjr and came to start after the rebuild and she runs terrible! makes some steamy smoke and engine stops. There are no error codes on my scanner and my friend called with the full Jag scanning programme on his computer... again no faults listed. So far as I can see all multi plugs are connected ok and there is no obvious reason for the problem. I have removed the cam shaft covers and checked cam timing with locking device in flywheel... all seems in order.
The only thing that I can think now is that maybe the camshafts on bank 1 should have been timed separately to bank 2 and the engine maybe turned one full turn and locked again after timing bank 1 before commencing cam timing bank 2... or can both banks be timed up with crankshaft in the same position???
I hope this sounds clear, unfortunately my studying of the Alldata site hasn't helped.
Many thanks in anticipation guys!
Warrick.

If the crank is locked both upper tensioners can be done. The cam flats on all four lined up with the crank locked? It shouldn't be an issue?
What do the plugs look like? If it stalls out that's possibly an air leak.
Whereabouts in Lancs are you? anywhere near me?

Hi Sean, I'm over here in 'Sunny Burnley'...
Plugs are new, there's no obvious signs of air leakage.
I did the identical job on my previous XJR with none of this rubbish!
