Car hesitates on full throttle.
Just got car back from headliner replacement. Got a loose gas cap warning which I thought was odd as I am the only one who fuels the car. Next time I drive it, it dies, no start. Towed to local shop he replaces two fuel pumps, one is dead the other sounds bad pluson the receiptI see a strainer. Now the car starts and runs well on gentle accelleration. As soon as you push the pedal half way or more the car shudders hesitates etc... car is a 2001 with 55000 miles. I'm now thinking somebody dumped something in the tank. Are my current symptoms maybe due to a clogged fuel filter? Where is it located? Can I replace this myself? I am average or above on mechanical mayhem.

Before doing work, do a test, attach a fuel pressure tester and run the motor to see if you are getting the correct readings. A new fuel filter is always good, and if yours has never had one, it's due. I would be more suspicious of the new fuel pump installation though.

RE: Car hesitates on full throttle.
I replaced the fuel filter and the performance was great for about the first five drives. Today I am still getting limited performance again. The car is accellerates better but still stumbles a little and I can't get it to get past 90 MPH. I am thinking of running this tank of gas more or less to the end and replacing the filter onceagain. I am also thinking maybe a good detergent gasoline as to help improve peformance. By the way no engine light has come on. Any suggestions on good fuel brands?
