Car stalled on emergency stop
After making an abrupt emergency stop, my car stalled, then would not re-start. I had to tow the car home, and the next morning the car started. Was this a safety sensor that caused this, or is there a reset button available? Thanks much!

Jave you got any idea why an abrupt stop resulted in the ckps failure? Juat coincenence, or was the panic stop to avoid something that you hit anyway? Thanks for the info in any case.

Way back in the 90s I had a Maserati Zagato towed into the shop with the engine in a NO START condition. The customer stated that he hit a low spot in the road and 'bottomed out'. The engine quit and had it wreckered to the shop. I finally found a damaged CKPS (crank position sensor) and replaced it. The sensor was mounted on the lower part of the front of the engine under the crank pulley and was very close to the reluctor wheel. I guess there was enough 'FLEX,PLAY,GIVE in the crankshaft that the reluctor wheel contacted the sensor and damaged it.
An emergency stop would thrust the crankshaft FORWARD but I have NEVER seen a CKPS physically damaged by contact with the crank sensor.
Was the sensor damaged??
If physical damage is evedent then the sensor is too close (maybe a spacer is needed??) or the crank thrust bearing has failed??

Motorcarman, thanks for the info. This happened to my wife one time before. Upon braking hard and abruptly, the car stalled, but started right back up again. When it happened to me, it did feel like the car "bottomed out" and the car did not start -- towed it home, and the next morning, it started right up, but as soon as I drove it a block, it stalled out again. I lifted the car up on one side and was able to get to the CKPS. The only thing I saw when I took it out was the 2 wires going into the sensor were kinked and full of oil (now I know where oil leak is -- from the main seal). I cleaned the sensor and straightened the wires, and the car started back up again, and has been running. I am going to get a new sensor and also check the things that you recommended I look at.
