Changing the drive shaft rubber (Jurid) couplings

After taking advice from my local mechanic, I've ordered replacement rubber (Jurid) couplings for either end of the drive shaft. Then, today I looked at the service manual where I found the following quote " Under no circumstances may the flexible (Jurid) coupling be removed from the driveshaft (or it's fixings loosened)."

Is this Jaguar covering themselves in case of resultant balancing issues, or can I reasonably ignore the warning? The cost of a whole new driveshaft is very different to the cost of the rubber mounts..., but a broken driveshaft could very well cost more again to repair...

Has anybody done this repair or have advice on how to proceed?

My X300 manual says the same.

Everyone and his brother ignores the warning and replaces 'em. And, shoot, Jaguar itself sells the couplings.

Pay attention to the orientation. There are arrows on the coupling showing which way the bolts pass thru. If you *remove* the driveshaft make sure to mark the exact position of the center bearing mounting brackets

Cheers

Hi Richard,
I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago, I just marked the propshaft and the Diff input shaft. When I had replaced the jurid, I made sure that the marks I had made lined up and I had no balance or vibration problems when the coupling was torqued up and the car tested. Bill W.

Drive Shaft Bearing change, 2001 XJ8
The rubber 'Jurid" couplings finally arrived from the UK, and when the mechanic came to fit them, he found that the bearing in the middle / rear part of the drive shaft also needs changing.

I've looked at some threads on this and am not sure whether it is possible to change just this bearing or whether I will need to buy an entire new drive shaft!

Can anyone advise me about this please?

It is alleged that the center bearing from a X300 fits. They are available seperately.
