Default clear Monitors after Check Eng Light Reset NOT READY CATALYST & COMPREHENSIVE MONITORS! Please?

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting a few monitors to clear after the
check engine light was reset. It's just a matter of
clearing monitors, which were clear before.

I need them cleared before the 01 XJ8L can be inspected here
in NY state...or actually, I need at least one of these two
cleared. One can remain and it still passes inspection.
NOT READY at this point are CATALYST and COMPREHENSIVE.
I wish I could say this succintly!

I have the detailed (and insane!) procedures from All Data to
get them cleared. The steps seem strange, but they are
supposed to be the quickest way to get the monitors cleared,
and the directions did work for clearing the other monitors
quickly. However, the specific procedure for clearing the
COMPREHENSIVE Monitor did not work. This is the
transmission. Maybe this procedure did not work for me
because my gear lever DOES come out of park without your
foot on the brake pedal and with the key in the running/on
position. (The previous owner just recently had the trans-
mission rebuilt, so we know someone had things apart. The
brake lights DO work properly.) The All Data info says the stick
should NOT move out of Park without your foot on the brake.
That would be
consistent with other cars, but in my other 2001 XJ8 Vanden
Plas, the gear leverALSO would come out of Park without
your foot on the brake.

If someone knows a different way to get the COMPREHENSIVE
Monitor cleared, maybe I wont need to be concerned about
that coming out of Park issue. Anyone? The All Data method
had many steps and started with an already driven/warmed up
car. Ignition off. Key out. Then put key in. Turn to run
position. Try to move gear lever out of Park. SHould not
move (but of course mine did, so already the sequence fails
to clear the monitor for me). Then it goes on to move the
gear lever through all the positions for certain times, and
trying to start the car in reverse. Then starting it in
N...etc, etc...Finally driving the car at 40 mph in second
gear for 5 seconds (i didnt like that) and on and on.
ANyway, the rest of the steps are numerous, but they are not
hard, so I am confident that I did complete them all
correctly each of the four times I tried this method. But
Im guessing it wouldnt clear the Comp monitor because my
gear lever moves out of Park and into R without the brake
pedal applied.

The other monitor that could be cleared is the Catalyst
Monitor. Im not willing to use the All Date Proccedure to
try to clear this one, because it calls for revving the
engine in P or N at 2500 rpms for five minutes straight. I
myself know of many a BMW transmission detroyed by this
method and the transmission in the Jag was just rebuilt a
few months ago. Does anyone know another way to get the
Catalyst Monitor to clear?

One person suggested that driving the car under normal
conditions might clear the Monitors eventually, but it could
take weeks.

I'll try calling the dealer again to ask, but the dealer
here has not been helpful.

Thanks so much for your insight.
Jay

SOMETIMES YOULL REALLY HAVE HELL GETTING THE CAR TO BE READY AFTER BATT. DISC. OR CLEARING CODES. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PARK RELEASE. SOMEONE PROBOBLY TRIMMED THE PIN TO ALLOW IT TO COME OUT OF PARK WITH THE SOLENOID DISENGAGING.
MY RECOMMENDATION, KEEP DRIVING IT.
