Exclamation Clunk in Reverse/Drive

Hi,
Need help to diagnose the problem.

My x308 produces CLUNK in rear suspension when i switch to Reverse (clunk) then to Drive (clunk).
It's "metal to metal" noise.

Any ideas?

Start by checking for play in the half shaft universal joints. The grease fittings are often ignored causing early failure.

..sounds that something definitive have given up.. You should really get the car up on a lift and check it out properly before you drive any longer distances.. if it goes metal to metal in the drivetrain somewhere you really need to checkout whats going on or you may end up with your wallet taken hostage at an repairshop..

If you can get it on a lift while running, and check for play in the drive components. Already mentioned are the halfshafts, but also look at the propshaft bolts.

There's a jurid coupling on the front and rear of the driveshaft that's made of rubber and can wear out. Also, check to see if you have an oil leak coming from the pinion or where the driveshaft meets the differential. The splines on the pinion after time wear out and can cause a clunk noise. Muffler mountings need checked as well. Great advice given from previous posters as well.

Hi everyone,
I have lifted the car and found the play in differential, where propshaft/driveshaft meets differential.

Here goes the video:

what should i expect inside?
Anyone has a detailed differential diagram/scheme?

It would be far easier/cheaper/less time consuming if you could get a whole rear subframe with differential and axles still installed. You would at least need to buy a new pinion, all the bearings and seals and then setup backlash if you chose the rebuild route.

I don't think I've seen a detailed exploded view of the internals of the diff. There's a couple of the members' websites that have a detailed walkthrough of diff rebuilds, but I don't have the links for those. They'd be the same sites that have the picture galleries of other jag repairs, maybe it was on the jag-lovers archive galleries?

The closest thing I've seen is the intro picture on the JTIS x308 diff menu page, but that might just be a generic diff and not the x308 diff (and it's not seen anywhere else in that section).
