While doing some work on the Jag, I noticed the black pad that's under the supercharger sounded hollow after tapping it. I was able to remove the black pad and noticed a hollow compartment under it, and seemed to have quite a bit of space in it. Does anyone know what the "hidden" compartment in the engine block is for?

With the black pad in its place.
i belive it to be a casting brace for strength . It doubles as a sound deadener.
and triples as an easy clean surface . Rather than a deep valley that contains water and muck .
lastly it's a mounting point for the supercharger .
So it's there for several reasons.

Primarily for weight saving, as mentioned a stiffening section..
There should also be a fiber filled bag under the supercharger - sole purpose of sound deadening.
