Default coolant level?

anyone know at what level the coolant should be in the expansion tank (98XJR)? When mine is 1.5 inches below the top at operating temps, the computer tells me "engine coolant low" - but that does not seem right to me. Sensor problem?

mine doesn't have to be at the bottom to cause the message..i think mine was popping up about midway of the expansion tank.

The car has a coolant bottle black and a clear overflow in the front bumper . When cold if the coolant in the overflow is not filled then that will cause a low coolant light

xs 2, all the way up cold, and if full to the top and the light comes on the float is sticking down, replace the reservoir

I'm not sure I follow you.. Is the overflow something different than the expansion tank?

If I'm one inch below the top of my expansion tank (when cold), computer says engine coolant low next time I drive it. My gut says that the float is stuck ... but when I fill it to the brim, the computer stops saying coolant low. does this make sense to anyone?

There a plastic reservoir behind the bumper on the driver side - is this what you're referring to genius? I don't know this coolant system very well. This bumper reservoir is about 1/2 full, or a little less - and the coolant expansion tank is almost full - still saying "engine coolant low". ????

Probably a bad sensor. Not that uncommon. http://www.motorcarsltd.com/item.wws?sku=IN104274

You know if you buy a reservoir it comes with a new sensor, then you take care of a sticking float and the sensor...or you can be real cheap and pin the connector..but remember its a jaguar, not a kia
