Default coolant overflow

alright so i got a 99 xjr and lately as my area has been reaching 80, 90 degree weather ive been using the a/c. its my first summer in the car so i have yet to use it. however when i do use it i put it on auto around 70 and let it be. i get to my destination to find when i turn the key off my fan stays on for about 5-10 minutes and coolant leaks out from the expansion tank? its done it to me 4 times now. all in well over 85 degree weather. one time leaving me with ALL the coolant leak out. One of my friends said my secondary fan isnt kicking on and thats the problem? does this sound right to anyone? if so is there a way i can wire a switch straight to it so i KNOW it comes on when needed? or where should i start with this. i cant be going through summer with no a/c in a jag! any help would be great! thanks

Try replacing your coolant cap. The cap is probably worn and when the pressure rises when the engine is shut off the spring in the cap is not strong enough to hold the coolant in the system. This is fairly common when the cap starts getting old.

What about the teperature gauge, while driving, is the car overheating?
Looks that you have an overheating problem to me, thats why the fan keeps running, after you switch off. I drive here in UAE with temperatures more than 110-120, and i never have fans running after i switch the engine off.

Should I replace the coolant cap??? I changed my coolant a month or so ago (with the proper coolant/anti-freeze) and toook a copuple of small trips, with no issues. I have only had the car 2 months or so, by the way it is 03 with 26K. Outside temp got close to 90 degrees today, had the A/C on and all was well; temp gauge 1/2 scale. Got home shut the car off and coolant starting leaking out, believe it was coming from the front/lower reservior. Any ideas???

Been a while for me to post, but eh my two cents and since I own one. My x308's cooling system has been a bit of a 'bugger'. It's been over a year for my 1998 and it's still leaking a weeee bit of coolant. First was bleed hoses, then waterpump/gasket twice, then thermostat AND whole replacement aluminum housing. Stopped leaking for about a month. Unfortunately it's back in the shop as we speak for another tiny coolant leak. *doooh!* hah.. I suggest replacing with aluminum as much as you can. Goodluck

Hi there MBXJR01

Did you ever resolve your coolant overflow problem?

I have a 1999 4L with 50,000 miles and mine has started doing the same as yours. I have changed the coolant cap, thermostat and water pump but it still does it now and again.

I can bring the car up to temperature in the garage and both fans kick in and then go off as they should. Temp gauge stays at 1/2 way.

I am near to taking it to the dreaded main dealer as my two independent jaguar specialists dont seem to know what is causing it.

Hopefully you may have the answer

Thanks
Gary

I've seen the experts at the independents accidently swap the bleed hoses on the expansion tank. check to see- the two plastic bleed hoses on the front of your expansion tank should cross each other before clipping in.

Spot on diagnosis by Bulldoze.

The hoses were incorrectly fitted during the engine re-fit and only became a problem when the ambient air temperature went above 20 degrees and I switched on the a/c

Thanks
