I just finished Timing job on my 1998 XJR. If you need help and would like to rent tool kit pls, let me know.

Would this be helpful/needed to do the upper tensioners?

Yes, I used them to make sure that cams are aligned correctly with crankshaft timing. There are probably other ways to do it, but I prefer not to take chances with my engine.
