Dead after turning engine off

Hi All,
I pulled up at work this morning and turned the engine off and something odd happened.
Fuel Guage, Temp guage and Rev Counter remained in their current positions (that is, didn't drop to zero positions), the steering wheel didn't move back to the fold away position and the odometer was not displaying the mileage(nothing is displaying on the message panel).
When I exited the car only the drivers door unlocked. I can only lock and unlockthe car with the black key, but worst of all I can't get the car to get out of this "dead" mode. Nothing happens when I trun the key in the ignition or of I press any buttons on the key-ring transmitter.
Help! It's lunchtime, I'm starving and I can't get my little beauty going!

Bon appetite,
On the menu today is one toasted battery.
If you can't get the boot open with the key, you'll have to power up the car by jumping 12v to the battery cable stud on the left fuse box, under the hood. Clip the ground onto one of the shock mount plate retaining bolts.

I read in the manual that standard "jumping" procedure prohibits you from connecting cables to both battery terminals - is this correct or just good practice?

Many thanks for the replies, but to add more info...
I kept going back to the car every hour or so and after 5 hours it had sorted itself out (looked in the window and the needles had dropped back to zero positions and the steering wheel had tucked back).
Opened the car (with the key ring transmitter) and the milage was happily displaying in the message panel and car started no problem.
By the way, I replaced the battery about 6 months ago.
Do the electronics go through a shut down procedure that could be getting itself in a muddle?
Does it sound like an electronics problem somewhere or could it be something in the ignition not working properly when I turn the key to turn the engine off?
