Default 2002 XJ8 X-PIPE what diameter? 2.25 or 2.5"

2002 XJ8 X-PIPE what diameter? I have 2.08" pipes as measured with a caliper, so I should buy the 2.25" (which is the smallest magnaflow makes) right? These should just fit over the existing pipes for a good fit I think...

Also does anyone make/sell CARB certified high flow cats for this application?

Just a small dog and pony show. I had the middle muffler removed and put a magnaflow 2 1/4" x-pipe in its place.

The car does not seem any louder inside the car, but you can now barely hear the exhaust with a deeper (better) tone from the outside.

The butt-dyno says there is some hp improvement, probably similar to a good wash and wax job. I imagine I could get more HP gain if I put a sticker on the rear window somewhere.....

I would guess there is some actual hp gain, but less than 5 hp.

I would do it again.

2002 XJ8

Hi

Add a video if you can of a walk round the car showing us what it sounds like. An inside one would be good too!

Looks like a lovely job, well done.

just a quick follow up. I used the 2 1/4" magnaflow x-pipe which was perfect for the job

This thread is worthless without sound clips/video I have always toyed with this idea, but didnt want the car to sound too aggressive. Fill us in please!

See Before pic (left thumbnail pic below) Removed big center muffler
See After pic (right thumbnail pic below) replaced with magnaflow x-pipe 2 1/4"

It is only barely louder in the cabin, just enough that you can now hear it.
Outside it is a bit louder, but lower mellower (better) tone. I like it.

I tried to make a video of it with my phone, but you could not hear the car over the background noise. (It is still that quiet) The change in volume is really small since I left the stock cats and 4 downstream mufflers in place. The difference is now I can barely hear the exhaust where before I could not. It is not remotely loud and it does not drone on the freeway. If I were to change anything else I think it would start to get louder so you would notice it, as it is, people might think it sounds stock, but a little healthier than the usual jag.
It does feel like the car breathes a little better and the butt dyno says I gained a tiny bit of HP

The measurement is very close. Within the limits for measurement error, and the particular pipe measured. 1.96 inch OD using digital calipers just behind the front shared muffler.

Do you really think you are getting greater flow through the "x" -- it looks tight.

I have no experience with this change -- just asking. I don't remember the center resonator have all that much restriction. I did see the insides of the exhaust for my VDP ..... unfortunately.

Yes, a bit better flow. Even though the middle muffler has the two main pipes as straight see through, the material that the flow must travel through to equal the pressures out both pipes has some restriction. It it my opinion that this design (with the x-pipe) allows for easier equalization of pressures down both pipes which reduces the highest peak pressure in the previously larger flow pipe (the side that the exhaust pulse was traveling down before meeting the common muffler) I think that because there is less of a peak dissimilar flow between the two pipes, the the overall effect of equalizing the pressures is to reduce the overall loudness of that amount of total volume, but then you must add the volume produced because of the deletion of the muffling effect of the muffler, so the total volume is slightly more.......but with less overall pressure...... or I could be wrong...

My subjective experience is I like it better, and like cookie monster says

"C" is for cookie,
Good enough for me!

Can you put the video on youtube, it works - the facebook doesn't for me?

Here's two tweaked exhaust systems,

Borla from Adam699
1998 4.2 Jaguar XJR, BORLA no cats sound - YouTube

Paramount from me
PARAMOUNT CATBACK.AVI - YouTube

I like cracking and popping exhausts - the sound of a free cat not a strangled one
