Desperate for some help
I have a 1998 xj8 Jag. Last month I was driving and the check oil and check water light came on. And the car went into safe mode and shut down. So I changed the oil and that resolved the problem. It ran perfect for two days. Then I was driving it and it did the same thing. The oil and water level are fine but in order to start it, I have to pumped the **** out of the gas pedal and when it does start, it seems it is running in the safe mode on about 3 cylinders. and will not run on its own unless I keep pumping the gas pedal and if I let off the gas pedal it just kills. Can anyone give me some advice what it might be or is their a way I can check the engine codes myself to give me some idea of what it might be. Thanks for your Help. Greg
Welcome to the forum. There are so many possibilities that a book could be written. You really do need to read the codes before much meaningful help can be provided. Here are some suggested readers:

One thing I should mention right away is that you are liable to be suffering from cylinder wash (or bore wash) after all the almost start/ cold shutdown. Use the search function to access some information on that problem.
It seems there's a rash of potential fuel pump failures, I'm guessing here but a quick check you can perform on the fuel pressure. While the engine is turning over check the fuel pressure by depressing the schrader valve on the fuel rail, dribbles = bad pump. It's on the fuel injection rail under the engine cover. The other test is to jumper the fuel pump by substituting the fuel pump relay with a wire and listen hard for a whine inside the tank.
I only suggest this as it quit while driving and might not post a code, but the safe mode should have so you know what to check next, let us know how it goes.

most auto parts stores will check the codes for free. Most basic obd2 readers will read engine codes. (They won't do SRS and Jag specific items though). Google the codes and you will get your answer.
