I read the manual after installing the trans. typical for me. Pls help if can.
I installed a transmission, 2002 xj8, with the flywheel / torque conv. in random position (a random bolt hole at 6 oclock).
The manual says there is a dot marker on the flywheel and one on the torque conv. that are supposed to be in certain positions. I neglected this and just installed it random.
Question: Is it really necessary that the flywheel and torque conv. be in the specified position? If so why?
I hope I don't have to remove / reinstall the transmission.

The only reason could be to do with dynamic balancing of the flex plate and the torque converter together and, possibly, together with the crankshaft. I do not know if this is how it was done on the Jag NA engines with ZF gearboxes but, in the case of SC engines with MB gearboxes, there are no markings and no requirements for any particular orientation when attaching the torque converter to the flex plate (meaning each part was balanced separately).
If you do not have increased vibration, everything is probably fine. You may have been lucky and engaged the parts according to the markings (the chances were 1 in 3) or the effect of being out of balance is minimal and not really felt.
Thanks for the input Robert and M.. Here's what the manual says. They kind of made a big deal of it. Both the fly wheel AND the converter are to be put in a certain position, I looked at my old converter and it has no blue dot on it.? This lining up step is not even mentioned on the SC models.
I haven't yet driven it, torqued it down, connected the lines etc. So maybe I'll remove it and check. I hate to have to do it twice but it will never be easier than now.
I'll decide as I walk over to the garage.
Maybe this will teach me to read the directions first.
THX Robert. I tried that but couldn't see markings. Could be because there are none. I uninstalled the trans (in only 34 minutes) and saw no markings and reinstalled it (took about 2 hours). I used a motorcycle jack to lift the trans, worked great. If I line up the white mark on the flywheel a converter to flywheel bolt isn't even close to the window.
I have a couple of things to connect then ….. test drive.

I was wondering what bolt size the flywheel bolts are. I wanna remove crank bolt st I can remove the heads off my donor engine. My best idea to hold from the backside is to wedge a steel bar between a few bolts sticking out, as I loosen crank bolt.
I have not heard of any pulley holding tools but it would probably make it easier. Thanx a lot.

I have installed two different ones and I never seen the mark? I had no problems at all I am sure that they are both off here is a picture of an engine on the stand showing the mark
