Default Differential swap?

About two weeks ago i was rear ended in my 96 xj6, and it was totalled. I found a pretty nice 2000 xj8, and the guy selling it said it needs a wheel bearing. Maybe he is right, but between what I've read, my gut instinct, and the fact that it is making a whining noise that doesn't sound quite like any wheel bearing noise ive heard before, i suspect it may need a differential. Will the one from the xj6 fit? Are they different ratios? Also, i am wondering if the transmissions are different.
As you can probably tell, I'm wondering what parts I can use from my beloved xj6 as i look for a replacement. The aj16 in the wrecked car ran great, with virtually no oil burning or leaks, and the transmission and differential were fine too. I don't want a nightmare project, but the insurance company only knocked $88 of my payout so im keeping the xj6 for whatever treasures i can salvage from it. Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated!

There are some parts from the X300 you can use on the X308, but not as many as you’d like to think. Bonnet, doors, wings and boot lid can be shared as well as some other bits like mud guards and the wiper. Your wheels will fit too If you want a spare set for winter months maybe. It’s worth swapping the windscreen washer jets from the X300 onto the X308 because it’s on the wiper itself on the 308 and I personally find it useless. It’s much better using the X300 jets. The best thing to do is go on the Jaguar classic parts website and cross reference part numbers for any items you may wish to keep.

The differential isnt a direct fit onto the X308 though, it’s slightly different in its appearance. I do believe there is a way to get it to fit, but I’m not sure of any benefits or advantages as it’s not something I personally have ever been interested in doing.

The "15HU" diff in the X300 can be made to fit into an X308. It can also be rebuilt with Dana44 internals. Its inherently stronger- with an 8.5 inch crownwheel compared to the 14HUs 8 inch.
With Dana 44 internals you can choose a wider selection of ratios also.

You would need to get the front face brace also, as the 15HU diff is offset and the 14HU isn't.

Some XJ8 diff ratio info - all the 4.0L NA and SC run an open diff with 3.07 ratio - this is programmed into the transmission module. This means any other ratio will trigger a fault.
If you are lucky the XJ6 might have that ratio, it should have a couple of steel tabs on the back of the diff casing, one with PWR LOC and the other with the ratio, 2 sets of numbers to divide gives you the ratio.
You'll need the face plate off the 6's diff cage as they're offset, unlike the 308 which is centered. Or use the whole axle and add upper exhaust mounts.

FYI, I have an extra diff in the garage if needed.
