Door latch mechanisms

My left hand rear door central locking has died - the door now doesn't lock or unlock except manually. I expect it's a dead solenoid, however a few questions before I attack it:

Is the year to year variation on the latch assembly enough to matter? The Jag Classic Parts website shows 4 variations depending on VIN: if I'm getting a used one do I need to get one from a car of the right year, or is the difference due to other parts of the assembly, and I'll be able to transfer the solenoid from any X308 to the old latch.
Any diagnostics I can do to confirm my theory before ripping the door apart? The car's my daily driver so I'd rather not get it in bits then find out it was a module or connector not the latch, and have to wait weeks to get parts in from offshore before re-assembling.
Any tricks to getting the door trim off that aren't explained in JTIS?
