Default downpipe / catalytic converter removal tips?

Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to remove the very well concealed downpipe nuts on my '98 XJR. I fabbed up a new exhaust and i would like to make some downpipes to match. My main issue is the stud closest to the rear of the block (i'm sure i can break the studs on the other 3), I really cannot comprehend what angle i need to get to it at without having to hoist the engine up about 6 inches. I may be dense, but any tips or tricks would be great. Thanks a bunch, Greverrr

My 98 XJR has nuts that are removed from the top. Which side are you fighting with?

My access is from the top as well. The drivers side is naturally more tricky, but the stud that is located most central and closest to the block on both sides is my main problem. I may need to cut and weld a 13mm wrench or socket and rod in a non conventional shape in order to compensate for spacial and leverage issues. Was hoping there was an easier way, but it seems i'll have to tough it out.

I don't recall a problem, but I was in the muffler business many years ago, and I have metric deep flex sockets designed for an impact gun.

I remember that nut on the passenger side being a pain in the *** to get to. I was able to remove it by using a mid-length socket. The deep and short sockets would not work.

Always use a deep reach socket on a knuckle joint, done it many times with no issue
