A-drum questions
The a-drum on my XJ went out the other day.
When I was coming to a stop, it slipped gears and then coasted to the stop. I started it up a couple minutes later, it drove a little bit and then slammed into 5th gear, which I drove all the way home in, without downshifting, The "Gearbox Fault" message came up.
Yesterday, I was able to drive it around in reverse a little bit (had to turn around on my street) so I figured with R and 5 being the two gears that work, it must be the a-drum.
The only warning that I had was this occasional noise at 70 MPH on the freeway (which I thought was something stemming from the TCM) and two error codes for the TCM that only came up once.
My first thought was that this would be the end for it but after thinking it over some more, I don't want a new car, I'll pay what I have to to fix it.
My questions are:
Where can I order a new a-drum for a good price? Labor is usually 10-12 hours?
When it goes, does it take other things with it, other than just damaging the fluid? When I drove it in reverse yesterday, and also started it today (didn't shift into gear), I heard a sound that sounded like something lose spinning.

+1 the more you drive it the more potential damage you do. I had a-drum failure last year & got away @ $2,100 w/ a rebuild via small indy shop.
Edit :
Also don't just expect to do the drum & that's the extent of the repair. The cause of drum failure is the pressure regulator valve so that's also in need.
Good luck !

Yep, I'm expecting to pay for a full rebuild, new pressure regulator valve and etc.
One place (Jaguar specialist) quoted me $3375, but I'm going to see if I can get it cheaper somewhere else, AAMCO maybe? Any recommendations in the San Diego / OC area?
Definitely not going to drive it, but I may have to start it and put it in reverse to put it in the tow.

You know with just a moderate amount of skill and the help of this board I replaced my A Drum and pressure regulator.
New filter/pan gasket/fluid and I spent aboud 600ish dollars and 2 weeks(working in my garage about 8 hours a week). I didn't need
to replace the friction plates. Little to no wear. Just took my time and read all the post I could and with help of people on here I did it.
That was January of 2017 and about 9500 miles later runs great.
