Lawn mower, definitely a lawn mower.... ...j/k amigo

But seriously, that sounds like a louder version of my tensioner/guides before I redid them. To take the valve cover off the check it isn't difficult. Before doing so I would take my finger and touch around where its emulating and see if you can feel something slapping the cover so when you take it off you'll have an idea of where to start.

I'd check the cooling fans. That's the only thing that would continue to run after the engine was shut off. Since you also said that it was close to shutting off on the way home, maybe the engine was overheating? I've seen engines seize due to overheating.

IF it is the tensioners, do the LOT. All chains, guides, tensioners. You don't want to save on the most vital part of the engine...

It is kind of like drinking the most expensive Champagne, but eating at McDonalds.

Not saying it is not overheating. The fans both ran when i took that video but did not run when i got back home and shut it off. it usually runs for 15/30 seconds on a hot day with a/c on the whole time. but it was the same sound as the one in the video but it was like when i shut off the engine the sound shut off with it but it was like it was "slowing down" to a stop. not the fan type noise that runs after.

After giving the video a loud er listen, that is def a metallic sound. Something with a lot of slack or play.

Is it rev dependant? Will the taking noise get faster when you rev it? Or is it constant? If rev dependant then it is chains/belt related. If it isn't then it can be fan related but that doesn't sound at all like fans. That sounds like a nasty valve hitting piston sound... Or even the solenoids for the VVT going haywire...

guys if I am being honest with you it sounds like it is coming from the fan or the belt pulleys. because the noise comes loudest from the front grille rather than opening the bonnet.

Possible primary tensioner/chain guide.

If your going to change the chains and tensioners, then yes, may as well do the guides. Yours isn't to hard since its just XJ8 and you don't have to work around the SC octopus. Tmingi chain and tensioner replacement
But, lets make sure that's the issue first.

If you take off the serpentine belt and start it from a cold start (so the engine can run a bit before getting too warm, since the water pump will not be operating) then I think you can rule out the accessory belt pulleys/bearings.

Wait until a more experienced mechanic chimes in to confirm what I recommended won't hurt anything, but I'm pretty sure it would be ok for a short time as a diagnostic test.

There are two replaceable bearings on the XJ8 I believe; the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley bearings.

It was actually the fan. My mechanic came and looked at it. we started it from cold and the noise wasnt there and we waited till it warmed but the noise started when the fan came on. we shut it off and the noise went away and i then turned the car back on the noise wasnt there until i turned on a/c and the noise came back when the fan came back on. My mechanic said it is a bad bearing in the fan

Good deal, definite money saver there....if you don't find one on site, I just got an email notification from Coventry West they have a rolling XJ8 they just got in they are scrapping. Not far from you in GA, so shipping should be quick.

That is good news, and relative easy to solve.
But it should not exclude you from changing the not yet changed tensioners.
You are playing with fire, just bite the bullet, please.

Yep. Borrowed time...

I drove mine a year long on the old tensioners. Just caught them in time!
