Default failsafe

Just bought 1999 xj8 and the red warning light reads " failsafe engine mode" then the car just barely idles enough to pull off the road. Sit for minute, turn off then it is ok for another mile or so then repeat. Any suggestions ? Also who makes the best mechanics manual 4 this. Pls help, maybe I am to poor to own this car lol

I've moved your question from X350 to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

The first move in troubleshooting a failsafe or MIL is to get the codes read.

The Workshop Manual (JTIS - Jaguar Technical Information System) is available for download from the FAQ's in X308 forum.

Welcome to the forum. If you are unable to get the car to parts store to have the codes read, start by taking the battery to them and see if it's good. A weak battery can cause many problems in these cars.
