False rear light warning

I am infrequently getting a "Rear Light Warning" when I brake. I have checked all the lights and they are operable...when it comes on, if I release the brake and press down again the warning goes away...strange.
Someone in another post said something about genuine factory lights
versus aftermarket lights. Before I go purchase a whole set of factory light bulbs to see if this is the problem, does anyone have any other ideas?
Is this comon?

What year is the car? If it's a 2003 or earlier, check your battery. If your battery has low voltage/amps during cranking that will turn on that warning light, and also possibly ABS, DSC not available, and several others. They can occur individually or altogether. If your bulbs are good, don't mess with them.
As poboyblues mentioned it could be a low battery, however if its the bulb failure message you are getting intermittingly it could be the bulbs. I have seen this many times at the dealership. If you are using aftermarket bulbs make sure you are using the proper Euro spec bulbs in the green packages if they are Sylvania bulbs for example instead of the domestic orange package bulbs. Although they will fit in the socket, the wattage draw will be different triggering a bulb failure message because the draw is too low. I have seen this many times.
