Follow-Up Result Post...What are Your Thoughts?
Hi all,
I recently posted on here requesting some of your expert and experienced guidence. I have a 98 XJR and I was planning on tackling the chain tensioner job because I've hearing for the last few months a faint sound like running chains, or rattle-like...(Because this is my first Jag, I didn't know what it could have led to if the tensioners broke,
until I started reading up on it)...So, I finally got to it this week after reading and finding out what could have possibly horribly happened to the motor....and discovered that they are the new 3rd gen. ones...so I was glad. But what originally led me to wanting to make sure it was taken care of was a noise. To describe it exactly, it kind of sounds like a chain running or rattle-like, but it really only is heard from within the car. I am not sure if you all remember sitting at a red light next to a big diesel truck; but when the car is at a stop or parked, it almost sounds like how a diesel truck would sound, a little like rattling. After I have discovered that the tensioners are the newer 3rd generation ones and not the plastic ones, I did more readings and research. Outside of this forum, I see some people posting that after they put in the new metal tensioners, they can hear the faint sound of the chains running. Whereas, they couldn't hear it before with the plastic ones.
I would have no reference to fall back on since this is my first Jag and I have never heard of how it sounded before, with the plastic ones. OR have nothing to compare it to because I know of no one that have a Jag.
The sound, very rarely, woud go away for a minute or so, but is always there. I believe even when the car is running. Performance of the car is normal. I also see posts where it is stating that the fuel injectors make rattling-like noises OR the bearings of the superchargers can't make that noise too, but I am just not sure of what it can be as of this point. Are those two statements true? Does the new metal tensioners really make a faint noise of the chains running? Has anyone here ever experience of such? Please help. Thanks much in advance for your expert and experienced inputs and help.
