Default Free play in driveline.

I recently acquired a 1999 VDP with 120,000 on the Odometer. I did not receive any service records. I have a local shop that specializes in Jaguars here in Oakland ca. Anyone familiar with there work? The car makes noise (a clunk) when shifted between drive and reverse and back, I also hear the noise by rocking the car back and forth when parked. Noise seems to be coming from around transmission. To me seems to be a loose/ sloppy ujoint, but I am completely new with Jaguars a have not gotten under it and looked. Any help on what it may be or what I should be looking for? Thanks in advance for your time.

Jim

They use rubber jurid couplers on the driveshaft ends, and yes- when they deteriorate they give a lot of free play. Jack up the rear and make a visual inspection for cracks or missing chunks- and check the diff and axles for free play as well.

Default Thanks

Appreciate the info. Will check itout. Anything else to look for in a car this age. Aware of the time belt tensioner. Is there a way to check if replaced outside of pulling cover????

The plastic thermo tower can fail, replacement is alloy.
Water pump can also fail, but was addressed early by Jaguar, if the pump has black impeller it's time to change it.

The only was for sure to check tensioners is pull the timing covers, it's a half hour job, so not difficult.

Hope this helps
