Fuel pump replacement

Default Fuel pump replacement

I just wanted to share my experience when I changed my fuel pump. When I removed the tank I was being lazy and instead of going under the car and disconnecting the fuel lines I left them on and was able to pull the tank out enough to get to the fuel pump inside. I put the new pump in then put everything back together. I went to start the car and when I stepped on the gas the car would bog down like a clogged fuel filter. Changed that and the same thing. I was going nuts trying to figure out what was going on. I thought the new pump was bad. Was not that. Finally I figured it out. When I pulled the tank out I stretched the fuel line under the tank. The fuel line has some kind of plastic tube inside the rubber hose. The plastic stretched so much when I put the tank back it kinked the hose. And no fuel was getting through. So take the time to disconnect the bottom fuel lines eventhough u can pull the tank out enough to change the pump. Just something to keep in mind

My XJR was in the same condition when I got it. Fuel lines damaged from lazy fuel pump attempt.

I have never had pump problems but just have to ask:

Why not disconnect the fuel lines at the other end?

this is not an endorsement of the method, however people who try this seem to miss one important point from the original posts about it.

those posts point out that the fuel lines should be unclipped from all bracketry under the car right up to the front to allow more freedom of movement.

I could not own and maintain my jags if it weren't for post like these.

It is the right thing to do but the lines are extremely hard to get to. I didn't think there would b much harm a fuel line should have some flexibility to it. But as I learned it's not just a normal fuel line. The feel line has a plastic tube inside. That has very little movement before it stretches and it does not go back. And that is the cause of the kink
