First of all, I would suggest searching the forum for "A drum failure" because this is a known and common fault - with various ways of fixing, from replacement gearbox to dropping the box and replacing the A drum.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it doesn't sound good and there's no way of sugar coating it.
